Math Apps for Kids with Dyscalculia: What Actually Helps
Dyscalculia affects 5-6% of children. Here's what the research says actually helps, and an honest look at where an app like TigerMath fits and where it doesn't.
Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability affecting arithmetic skills, and it’s more common than most parents realize — research puts its prevalence at roughly 5–6% of the school-age population, similar in frequency to dyslexia or ADHD. If your child has been diagnosed, or you suspect it, the honest answer to “what app should I download” is more nuanced than a single recommendation.
What the research actually says helps
A 2019 clinical review in Deutsches Ärzteblatt International found that symptom-specific practice — individualized sessions targeting a child’s exact problem areas — produced markedly better results than generic, non-targeted math practice. Broad, one-size-fits-all drilling is measurably less effective than practice aimed at what a specific child is actually struggling with.
Separately, a well-established line of research by Ashcraft and Krause found that math anxiety directly reduces working memory — the mental workspace needed to actually solve a problem — and that timed, high-pressure testing conditions make this worse. For a child who already finds math difficult, a ticking clock isn’t motivating; it actively eats into the cognitive resources they need to succeed.
Put together, two things matter more than any single feature:
- Targeted, not generic, practice — knowing exactly which facts or skills a child is missing, and practicing those specifically.
- Low-pressure, untimed conditions when anxiety or working memory is a factor — not every mode of practice should be a countdown clock.
